Well, I am a sucker for anything Austen-related, so of course I watched the first episode of Death Comes to Pemberley.

Random thoughts:

~Loved seeing Chatsworth, which I visited earlier this year. (Full disclosure: Chatsworth and Derbyshire inspired Death in the English Countryside, which has an Austen tie-in, too.)

English Countryside 175

~It is a testament to Austen’s characters that we want to continue to explore their lives. While I really enjoyed seeing more of Georgiana and found the idea of Wickham distinguishing himself as a war hero interesting, Darcy seemed rather milquetoast.

~Being the mistress of Pemberley seems to to have sucked the wit and good humor right out of Elizabeth.

~Colonel Fitzwilliam has become Darcy with a possibly violent edge.

~Matthew Goode: hands down the best portrayal of Wickham. I always found Wickham in the 1995 BBC miniseries version a bit hard to take seriously as a cad and a rouge, but Goode has me convince he could be both a hero and a villain.

I didn’t realize Death Comes to Pemberley was a miniseries. Will definitely tune in for more…
